Advocacy Group Still Awaits Response on Conrad’s Law Following Tragic Daycare Death

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A nonprofit advocacy group says it has yet to hear back from Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey regarding Conrad’s Law, a proposed bill designed to improve safety standards in daycare centers across the state.

The bill was named in honor of 3-year-old Conrad Ashcraft, who died on May 16 at Poppy’s Playhouse in Park Hills. Conrad was reportedly placed under an 18-pound weighted blanket by a caregiver during nap time and left alone in a hallway, where he was later found unresponsive. The Uvalde Foundation for Kids, the group behind the bill, is calling for the installation of surveillance cameras in daycare facilities and specialized training for staff caring for neurodivergent and special needs children. While an investigation remains ongoing, no charges have been filed. Conrad’s autopsy will not be released at this time, according to Jefferson County Prosecutor Trisha Stefanski, the special prosecutor in the case.

The foundation’s petition in support of the law has already gathered over 8,000 signatures.
