Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The tragic incident involving the death of 3-year-old Conrad Ashcraft, at a daycare facility in Park Hills, has led to the appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the case.
Spring Gray, the owner of Poppy's Playhouse 2, which is the daycare facility where the incident occurred, was previously employed by the prosecutor’s office under three prior administrations. Because of that connection, current St. Francois County Prosecutor officials have recused themselves from the investigation.
The St. Francois County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation.
To ensure an impartial review, the Prosecutor’s Office formally requested assistance from the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney. On Monday, May 19, Trisha Stefanski, the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney, agreed to serve as an independent Special Prosecuting Attorney for St. Francois County. Stefanski will be responsible for reviewing investigative reports, assisting in the legal process, and pursuing any charges deemed appropriate.
Officials emphasized that this decision was made to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure justice is served for the child and their family. Further updates will be provided as the case develops.
