Trump Reportedly Urging Missouri to Redraw Congressional Map Before 2026

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri currently has six Republican and two Democratic members in Congress, but President Donald Trump reportedly wants the state to shift to a 7-1 Republican advantage.

That would require redrawing the state's Congressional districts, a move legal experts say isn't allowed under Missouri’s Constitution until after the next U.S. Census. Redistricting took place in 2022 following the release of 2020 Census data, and case law from the Missouri Supreme Court supports the position that maps must remain in place for a decade unless new Census figures trigger changes.

Despite that, some Republicans are considering whether to revisit the map, potentially targeting Democratic Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City district. However, doing so could weaken one of the current GOP-held districts, complicating consensus within the party.

Governor Mike Kehoe has not yet decided whether to call a special session on redistricting. Senate leadership says they will support whatever path the governor chooses.
